Service: E-commerce site selling baby shower party favors and supplies.
Timeframe: April 1, 2014 – May 15, 2014
Background:
My Baby Shower Favors suffered a traffic decline around 2011 as many sites on the Internet were hit by Panda and Penguin. We cleaned up some duplicate content on the site as well as removed some low quality links off site. The result was a 380% increase in traffic from Google.
The Challenge:
The goal was to see if cleaning up duplicate content issues and low quality links would improve search engine results for My Baby Shower Favors.
What We Did:
We did several things to make the site more friendly for both search engines and human visitors.
Pagination – Rather than 48 items per page, we changed it to 96 items per page. This reduced the number of total pages in each category to one or two and made it easier for people to browse the site.
Boilerplate content – Some items, like baby shower cookies, had the same duplicate text on every page. The cookie ingredients needed to be on each cookie page, so we created a single page with the required content and displayed that page in an iframe rather than have the text duplicated on all cookie pages.
We also eliminated some other unnecessary duplicate content pages and removed some discontinued items.
Removed article directory links – Article directories use to be popular before 2011, but are now considered bad practice for SEO. We removed many of the old links from such sites.
The results:
Search impressions and clicks increased over 600%. The next step to further improve results is to implement a content marketing strategy to build an audience and authority to the site.
